Military Units

Weapons

Javelin (3 Gold)
The simplest of weapons. Javelins are cheap, easy to use, and highly effective in numbers. They can be used as short spears to fend off cavalry charges, or hurled at approaching enemies as short-ranged weapons.

Sword (4 Gold)
Long, sharp blades perfect for cutting or stabbing. Swords are more costly than spears, but serve better in heavy fighting or on rough terrain. These are the most versatile weapons, useful in almost any situation.

Pike (5 Gold)
Extremely long spears. Pikes are deadly weapons if used well. They are especially lethal against cavalry, but can threaten any enemy as long as they are used in tight, ordered formations.

Sword & Shield (7 Gold)
Carrying a shield provides an extra layer of defense for your swordsmen. They can block arrows and keep enemies at arm's length until ready to strike. This is thus the best combination to use in the thick of battle.

Javelin & Shield (4 Gold)
Shield & Javelin units are the most flexible and well-rounded. They are moderately cheap to recruit, and can fight off most enemies by hurling their javelins or using them as short stabbing weapons. The addition of a shield provides extra defense and helps them survive tough melees or ranged volleys.

Pike & Shield (7 Gold)
The famous "hoplite" combination. A pike and shield formation is almost unstoppable as long as its members maintain a tight formation. If that formation is disrupted they can be quite vulnerable.

Sling (2 Gold)
A simple leather pouch used to hurl stones or lead pellets at great speed. Slings have exceptionally long range and are cheap to make and produce. Slingstones, unfortunately, lack the power to penetrate most forms of armor.

Bow (3 Gold)
Bows are more difficult to make and use than slings, and lack the range of the latter. But bows are one of the few ranged weapons with enough firepower to penetrate armor, making them useful against heavier foes.

Bow & Sword (5 Gold)
Units with both a sword and bow are excellent offensive units, capable of peppering enemies with arrow fire before closing in for the kill with their blades.

Armor

Unarmored (0 Gold)
While being unarmored does leave soldiers dangerously exposed, it does have advantages. Unarmored soldiers can more easily move about and do not get tired as fast as armored soldiers. Not armoring your soldiers is also obviously the cheapest option.

Leather (3 Gold)
Hardened leather armor and padding is relatively cheap to manufacture and provides some level of protection. It can turn aside glancing blows and won't weigh down its wearer, making it an excellent option for skirmishers or cheap units.

Chainmail (6 Gold)
Heavy chain armor can stop slashes or light blows and mitigate otherwise deadly wounds. It is somewhat costly to manufacture and slows down its wearers, but that is a small tradeoff for its high-quality defense.

Scalemail (10 Gold) Not available to Barbarian Kingdoms
Thick metal scales or strips layered over flexible chainmail. This armor is almost impenetrable to most ancient weapons and provides excellent defense. It is also heavy and uncomfortable to wear, and will slow down and quickly exhaust units wearing it.

Movement

On Foot (0 Gold)
The oldest means of transportation. Infantry marching on foot make up the bulk of most armies, since horses are prohibitively expensive.

Horse (4 Gold)
Horses are fast and mobile. Mounted soldiers make excellent scouts and skirmishers, able to harass slower enemies and avoid danger.

Armored Horse (7 Gold)
Armored horses are slower than normal, but still faster than infantry. They provide extra survivability, letting their riders get into the thick of things.

Chariot (10 Gold)
Light carts pulled by one or more horses, chariots are an ancient form of transportation. They do very badly on rough terrain where their wheels cannot roll smoothly, but on the field of battle they can run down enemies and cut through formations better than other cavalry.

Elephant (15 Gold)
Huge, lumbering elephants are the ultimate cavalry. Although slower than horses, these great beasts can crush men and terrify enemies with their mere presence. Their greatest drawbacks are cost and the ever-present risk of the elephant going berserk.

Training

Levees (0 Gold)
During wartime it is common practice to press any villagers and vagrants the army comes across into service. They provide cheap cannon fodder that can help overwhelm enemy armies.

Militia (2 Gold)
Citizen soldiers who attend periodic training exercises, these men often form the backbone of large armies. They fight well enough and are motivated by their desire to protect their homes, but lack the discipline to stand firm in the face of overwhelming odds.

Professional (4 Gold)
Professional soldiers serve for years, and when they are not on campaign they are training and preparing for it. Their skill at arms is excellent an their discipline unshakeable.

Noble Warrior (6 Gold)
Men from the noble or warrior classes of a kingdom are often trained from birth to fight. Their skill in combat is unrivaled, and they are often wealthy enough to afford their own, customized equipment.

Berserkers (8 Gold) Only available to Barbarian Kingdoms
Berserkers are crazed warriors who fall into a bloodthirsty rage on the battlefield, killing anyone in sight. Their feriocity is legendary. They will fight until killed without thought of retreat. Unfortunately their bloodrage also makes them impossible to control. Once they join the fight, it is impossible for them to be redirected.

Naval Ships

Hull

Open Hull (1 Gold)
A simple open-hulled ship with a brace of oars on each side and a sail. These vessels are not really suited for naval combat; their best use is transporting soldiers.
An Open Hull ship can carry 500 Men beyond it's crew.

Bireme (2 Gold)
A two-decked oarship, the Bireme is a good compromise between speed, maneuverability, and cost.
A Bireme ship can carry 300 Men beyond it's crew.

Trireme (3 Gold)
The trireme is considered by many to be the pinnacle of warship design. These three-decked galleys are fast and extremely maneuverable, capable of turning on a dime and facing other warships head on.
A Trireme ship can carry 200 Men beyond it's crew.

Quadrireme (4 Gold)
A truly massive warship, the Quadrireme has four decks and hundreds of oarsmen. These huge ships can match any smaller ship in maneuvers, and they have extra hull strength and more marines as well.
A Quadririme ship can carry 150 Men beyond it's crew.

Weapon

Grapples (0 Gold)
Grappling an enemy ship and boarding it is the simplest and easiest method of naval combat. At long range, balistae firing strong cords can be used to pull enemy ships in close enough for handheld grapples. Unfortunately the grapples can be cut, and even if the enemy ship is dragged close enough for boarding, the marines will have a hard fight before they can take the ship.

Ram (1 Gold)
Simple but effective, a ram can be a devastating weapon if used correctly. A simple tap at the right angle will shatter even the largest ship. However, rams requires skill and speed to use effectively; they rely upon careful maneuvering to strike at the right time and are ill suited for use by poorly trained crews.

Boarding Pier (2 Gold)
A hooked pier attached to the mast which can be lowered in order to board an enemy ship. This device gives your marines a great advantage while boarding an enemy ship, but the heavy pier makes the ship unwieldy and difficult to maneuver.

Siege Engines (4 Gold)
Catapults and other siege engines can be used to damage enemy ships by hurling stones or flaming projectiles. They lack the sheer power of rams, but their range forces approaching enemies to run a gauntlet of fire. Siege weapons require a stable platform to fire from, and can be dangerous if used on smaller ships.

Crew

Galley Slaves (1 Gold)
Slave rowers pressed into service are a cheap way to fill up lots of ships, but their lack of motivation and skill makes long battles or difficult maneuvers risky.

Militia Sailors (3 Gold)
Citizen-sailors who serve in times of war, these men have patriotism and decent skills at rowing. They can hold their own in any maneuver.

Professional Oarsmen (5 Gold)
Professional oarsmen who serve in the military. These men benefit from constant practice on warships, and have learned how to handle their quirks and difficulties. They can pull off even the most difficult maneuvers easily.

Siege Engines
Note: Armies do not carry siege weapons with them. By purchasing weapons here, you purchase the necessary materials - the nails, skeins, ropes, pouches, and other equipment that cannot be made on the field. Once purchased, you may build that siege weapon at any time.

Battering Ram
With an iron cap, ropes, and nails it is relatively easy to construct a battering ram wherever necessary. These nasty siege weapons must be rolled up to an enemy gate or wall, but are armored to prevent arrows or flames from destroying them. Once in position, a ram can slowly hammer down any wall or gate.

Siege Tower
A great, wheeled tower with a battering ram at the bottom and tall parapets. A siege towers allows the attackers to approach walls in safety and fire down on the defenders. Men can jump down onto the walls from the tower itself, or the ram can destroy that same wall in safety.

Scorpio
A small ballista weapon used more as an anti-infantry sniping weapon than a siege device. It can safely pick soldiers off of enemy walls, or snipe an enemy commander on the field of battle.

Balista
A powerful siege engine capable of throwing stones or great steal-tipped bolts. It is not capable of knocking down solid stone walls, but it does well against wooden ones, and can be devastating if fired at massed infantry.

Onager
A powerful catapult weapon capable of hurling stones great distances and, with time, knocking down even the strongest walls. It is not as accurate as a balista, and thus not as useful against enemy soldiers, but it is the premier siege weapon for assaulting fortifications.
